This website contains step-by-step cookbooks for reducing data taken by all three instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We have designed the cookbooks to use only publicly available data and routines so that anyone can use them at any time.

Although the cookbooks presented here are designed to help you learn how to use software packages developed at the SSC (e.g. MOPEX, APEX, SPICE), Spitzer data can be analyzed using any package that reads FITS files. (If you decide to use any other packages, keep in mind that the Spitzer images are in units of MJy/sr). Please send us your tips for analyzing Spitzer data with other packages (e.g. IRAF, IDL, skyview, SExtractor) at help@spitzer.caltech.edu and we will do our best to incorporate your suggestions.

This website is a WORK IN PROGRESS and is likely to be updated on short timescales.

Cookbooks by Instrument:

IRAC

Infrared Array Camera
IRS

Infrared Spectrograph
MIPS

Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer

Cookbooks by Software Package:

Spectroscopy
CUBISM

CUbe Builder for IRS Spectral Maps
IRSCLEAN

an interactive IDL tool for creating bad pixel masks from Spitzer IRS BCD (and pre-BCD) image data, and "cleaning" the masked pixels in a set of data

SMART

SMART is an IDL-based software tool, developed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) Instrument Team at Cornell University, that allows users to perform real-time processing and analysis of IRS data.

SPICE

Spitzer IRS Custom Extraction The Spitzer IRS Custom Extraction (SPICE) software provides a JAVA-based tool that allows the user to interactively extract Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra.
Imaging
MOPEX/APEX

MOsaicker and Point source EXtractor) is the SSC's package for reducing and analyzing imaging data, as well as MIPS SED data.

Bandmerge

Bandmerge allows users to input ASCII tables of positions and fluxes of astronomical sources in 2-7 wavebands and combine them into a single merged table.

Other
LEOPARD This is the software that allows you to download data from the Spitzer archive.

SPITZER
SYNTHPHOT

This software allows you to determine the synthetic Spitzer fluxes for all imagers, given an input template spectrum.
