9.2 Target Selection: Orion Nebula Cluster
Technically we should check
the Reserved Observations Catalog (ROC) using Leopard (http://ssc.spitzer.caltech.edu/documents/leopard/)
before planning any observations. Enter your target and choose ``search programs''
from the file menu.
We find that the Trapezium region has pretty thoroughly been
covered in IRAC, MIPS, and even IRS already. Had this been a real
proposal, the next step should have been checking the Duplicate Observations Rule to see if the specific
proposal idea we have in mind qualifies as a new observation- perhaps we
would like to go deeper or over a larger area than previous observations,
in which case our observation might not be considered a duplicate.
However, for purposes of this example, we will plunge onward nevertheless
with a shallow, large-area survey of the Trapezium. The Trapezium is
very bright. Spot can help us find
objects which are officially classified as ``bright''. More on this
below.
