For point sources, the fringes are normally considered to have been corrected during the flatfielding process. However, for extended objects, flatfielding can make fringes worse. If your data looks as though it has fringe effects, or if you would just like to perform the fringe removal yourself, then use IRSFRINGE. IRSFRINGE is a GUI-based program that uses the ascii table files, not the 2-D fits file, to allow interactive fringe removal. Note that testing indicates that moving target tracking errors produce negligible changes in the fringing pattern. Therefore, IRSFRINGE should work the same way for both fixed targets and tracked moving targets. A generic example on how to use IRSFRINGE can be found here. This example draws upon the IRSRINGE instructions outlined here. This specific example involves correcting a spectrum from the LH module, but it is generally applicable to any of the IRS modules which suffer from fringing. IRSFRINGE was developed and tested to run under IDL 5.6, and its perfomance is unverified under other IDL versions.
