Targets of Opportunity (ToO) are transient phenomena whose exact timing
and/or location on the sky are uncertain at the time of the proposal
submission. (more information...)
How to apply for ToOs
Requests for observations of these objects should be submitted through the
normal General Observer proposal process in response
to a Call for Proposals.
Observations of completely unanticipated phenomena can be requested
through Director's Discretionary Time procedures.
How to activate a ToO
For approved programs with low-impact ToOs, the Principal
Investigator (PI) or Technical Contact (TC) for the program should email
the SSC Helpdesk (help@spitzer.caltech.edu) to request activation. The
email should contain detailed information about the ToO target and how it
satisfies criteria for activation outlined in the approved proposal.
Remember that low-impact, being defined as more than 5 weeks out, does not
mean 4 weeks plus one day...
For approved programs with medium-impact ToOs, the PI/TC
are given phone numbers to call (a primary and a backup) to request
activation IF THE ACTIVATION REQUEST IS ON A WEEKEND (after 5PM Friday or
before 8AM Monday) OR HOLIDAY. The PI/TC should email the SSC Helpdesk
(help@spitzer.caltech.edu) for an activation request Monday-Friday (day or
night). The email should contain detailed information about the ToO target
and how it satisfies criteria for activation outlined in the approved
proposal.
For approved programs with high-impact ToOs, upon program
approval in the Spring, the PI/TC are given phone numbers to call (a
primary and a backup) to request activation. The PI/TC should follow-up
the call with an email to the SSC Helpdesk containing detailed information
about the ToO target and how it satisfies criteria for activation outlined
in the approved proposal. Estimated minimum turnaround time is 48 hours
between receipt of the final approved AOR and the observations themselves.
