What does IRSA provide for Spitzer data?
IRSA serves Spitzer data and
ancillary data from the Legacy programs as
well as ancillary data from the First Look
Survey.
(After the mission, IRSA will manage the entire Spitzer archive.)
What does IRSA do with the data?
On receipt, the data are made available for download through simple web
pages. The data should be used caveat emptor until they pass rigorous QA
processes that are part of ingestion into the archive. Data providers
approve such changes as QA mandates, with respect to:
- the organization of the data sets, so that they are readily
interpretable
- the syntax and structure of the data, which must comply with
astronomical standards
- the completeness of the data products
- the accuracy of the scientific content
Once ingested into the archive, IRSA serves the Spitzer data through
the services listed below.
How does IRSA provide it?
- Catalog search:
- Basic catalog access via BabyGator
for easy access to the most popular catalogs.
- Advanced catalog access via Gator for
custom extractions on source catalogs. Gator supports general queries of
arbitrary complexity on all catalog parameters. Examples include:
- FLS:
- MMT/Hectospec Spectroscopic Catalog
- SDSS and MIPS Astrometric and Photometric Catalog
- SDSS Spectroscopic Catalog
- GLIMPSE
- SWIRE
- Image search and visualization:
- Cutouts, for
producing cut-outs from larger images.
- Catalog/image interaction tools:
- Interactive visualizer, OASIS, for
viewing and interacting with data from many astronomical archives.
- Multi-wavelength data set spatial interface, Atlas, for
working on complex data sets (such as basically all the
Legacy data) that
may contain catalogs, images, and spectra.
- Inventory and data discovery tools:
- IRSA inventory and data exploration service, RADAR, for
generating an inventory of all IRSA science products (not just Spitzer
Legacy) and providing one-click retrieval of those data sets.
- Inventories of source catalogs, maps of spatial coverages, and access
to catalog data housed at IRSA, NED, and VizieR are accessible
through the NVO
QuickStats engine.
Astronomers interested in using program interfaces, including
NVO-compliant interfaces, are asked to contact the IRSA
Help Desk for additional information.
