SIRTF launch (21 July 03)

NASA has scheduled the SIRTF launch for August 23 at 1:37:43am (EDT), from Launch Complex 17-B at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. This re-scheduled date follows an April decision to postpone the launch to address concerns about solid rocket motors (SRMs) on the Delta-II Heavy launch vehicle and to permit the two Mars Exploration Rover launches to proceed. The first stage of the SIRTF launcher is being erected, with installation of the nine SRMs continuing through July 24. The second stage will be erected on about July 28. Shortly thereafter, the SIRTF Observatory will be enclosed in a fairing and installed atop the launch vehicle. The summer launch window extends through mid-September.

Proposals are currently due on or about Feb 14, 2004; see Science Schedules.

SPOT V7.5 Released (20 June 03)

SIRTF Planning Observations Tool (SPOT) V7.5 has been released. Because there are very few changes in this version, all of the previous documentation is still valid and has not been updated.

There are no major enhancements included in the Spot client in version 7.5. The changes include:

  • The new version 7.5.1 AIRE servers have an updated version of the MIPS scan mirror emulator which improve the fidelity of the MIPS AOR visualization overlays.
  • There are changes to the IRAC small-scale cycling pattern. (See the IRAC news pages for more information.)
  • There is a new launch date of 23 Aug 2003 now incorporated into SPOT.
Windows/Unix/Linux users: You must let Spot automatically update to version 7.5 to get AIRE estimates, view programs, or check-in modified programs. Mac users: auto update will not work for you, our apologies! A new build of 7.5 for you is posted on the SPOT download page.

To use the automatic update process:

  1. Start Spot when you are connected to the internet.
  2. Make sure that "Use Automatic Updates" is checked under the Options menu.
  3. Wait a few minutes and Spot will tell you that the new version is ready after it has downloaded the required new files.
If you do not already have SPOT installed, download the 7.1 version on the web and then use automatic update.

SPOT V7.1 Released (16 May 03)

SIRTF Planning Observations Tool (SPOT) V7.1 has been released. There is also an updated SPOT User's Guide to go with it. We have also updated the PET and the Observation Planning Cookbook.

These items can be downloaded or accessed from the Proposal Kit area on the SSC website.

The SPOT automatic update feature will work to go from version 7.0 to this version, but if you are running a version earlier than 7.0, we urge you to download the software directly from this site, as the file is quite large.

Some of the new features in this release are:

  • The maximum IRS peak-up fluxes you can enter in SPOT have changed. Previously, 1 Jy was the maximum. Now the maximum values are: Red point source: 1000 mJy, Blue point source: 450 mJy, Red extended source: 700 MJy/sr, Blue extended source: 700 MJy/sr.
  • SPOT has been updated to search the new format of the full 2MASS catalog for IRS peak-up sources.
  • There is now a Mac OS X installation of SPOT.

Observation Planning Workshop (7 May 03)

The SIRTF Science Center (SSC) is pleased to announce a 2-day observation planning workshop to be held at the SSC, Pasadena, CA, on 25-26 July 2003. The format of this workshop will be similar to the ones held at the SSC in November and December 2002 and will provide insight and information on SIRTF capabilities, plus the observation and proposal planning tools available for download from the SSC website.

There is no registration fee associated with the workshop, but we only have 40 workshop places available. Ph.D.-level astronomers and graduate students are eligible to attend. No restrictions are made as to nationality or institution. Places at the workshop will be given on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you are interested in attending, workshop information, registration and hotel information is available online.

The deadline for the hotel block booking is 11 July.

We look forward to seeing you this summer at the SSC.

SPOT V7.0 Released (26 Mar 03)

SIRTF Planning Observations Tool (SPOT) V7.0 has been released. There is also an updated SPOT User's Guide to go with it.

These items can be downloaded or accessed from the Proposal Kit area on the SSC website.

The automatic update feature will work to go from version 6.3 to this version, but if you are running a version earlier than 6.0, we urge you to download the software directly from this site, as the file is quite large.

Some of the new features in this release are:

  • The sequence constraint now includes a time duration in which the sequence must be completed.
  • We have added 'tabs' to the main AOR screen to allow easier management of the AOR list and images.
  • Timing constraints on a single AOR that overlap each other are not allowed.
  • Programs for viewing may be selected by program ID as well as name.

New and Updated Pages and Documents (March 2003)

In addition to the items associated with the SPOT 7 release above, several interesting pages in the SSC hierarchy have been recently created or updated, including the following:

Updated Blackout Schedule (March 2003)

As soon as the SV phase ends and as soon as the SSC can characterize and document the Observatory performance, the yellow period now begins. This will be about 3.5 months after launch, or near the start of August. During this period, the GTOs and LegSci teams will be permitted to make only those major changes that fall within those criteria defined by the SSC Director. This is the exception to the rule, whereby major changes are normally not permitted while a CP is 'active.' An updated blackout schedule has been posted in the usual location.

2003 SIRTF Fellowship awards(February 2003)

The SIRTF Science Center announces the selection of four new SIRTF Fellows for three-year appointments, starting with the 2003-04 academic year. These research awards were made following a peer review of 38 applications. They are: Michael C. Cushing (NASA-Ames), Sarah C. Gallagher (UCLA), Jacqueline Kessler (University of Texas), and Henrik Spoon (Cornell University). more information on the research projects...

SIRTF First Look Survey -- Ancillary Data Release (January 2003)

Additional supporting ancillary data are now available. These data are VLA observations taken with the B-array at 1.4 GHz. The VLA image is a mosaic of 35 VLA pointings taken during 2001 and 2002. The web-based data service providing public access to the data is provided by the InfraRed Science Archive.

SPOT V6.3 Released (January 2003)

SIRTF Planning Observations Tool (SPOT) V6.3 has been released. There is also an updated SPOT User's Guide (v3.3).

All of these items can be downloaded or accessed from the Proposal Kit area on the SSC website.

The automatic update feature will work to go from version 6.2 to this version, but if you are running a version earlier than 6.0, we urge you to download the software directly from this site, as the file is quite large.

Some of the new features in this release are:

  • The new launch date ephemeris file is supported (April 15, 2003).
  • The background model now calculates the estimates with respect to the position of SIRTF, not the Earth.
  • Timing constraints are no longer required to be fully contained within a visibility window. Each constraint must overlap at least one visibility window.
  • The default directory location for the SPOT directory has been changed for Windows 2000/XP installations (see Release Notes)
  • The problem with parsing dates in internal installations has been fixed.
