SPICE allows spectral extractions using standard pipeline modules via a user-friendly GUI. Output spectra are in IPAC table format, matching the pipeline output. SPICE is not designed for spectral analysis. SMART provides more flexible spectral extractions at the expense of requiring more user knowledge of calibration; in many cases, the user should derive their own flux calibration or spectral response function. SMART allows measurement of spectral features through its ISAP-derived interface. SMART can directly read IRS pipeline or SPICE output tables. The IRS IST recommends using the extensive extraction/calibration features of SPICE to obtain reliable spectra, and then using the unique measurement/line-fitting capabilities of SMART to measure scientifically useful parameters.
