Spot (Tool for Planning Observations) and Leopard (Archive Tool) Software

Spot is a software package used by Spitzer observers to plan observations and submit proposals, and Leopard is a software package used to query the archive and download data. Together, this group of cats is referred to as the "Spitzer Pride."

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Spot v17 and Leopard v8 are the current software versions.

  • Users should ensure that Options -> Auto-Update is selected in Spot/Leopard to obtain an automatic update of the software.

  • Only the latest version of the software can connect to the servers at the SSC.

  • If your system does NOT auto-update, then you DO NEED to grab the new packages from below and install them.

  • Please note: The Windows installer does work, but you may see some errors if you don't have Java 1.5 pre-installed.

NB: we have database blocktimes every Tuesday from 6 to 9 AM Pacific time. You may not be able to retrieve data or view programs during this time.

  • You must have JAVA version 1.5.0 or higher. See below how to upgrade your Mac to use JAVA version 1.5.
  • If you do not have a sufficiently upgraded JAVA version then trigger a "Software Update" from the Preferences menu and upgrade your JAVA.
  • Click on the link for the Spitzer Pride (here) and save the program to disk.
  • Drag the Spitzer Pride folder icon from the pop-up window onto your hard disk (into whichever directory you want to install it).
  • Run the program (double-click on it) to install it.
  • It will create two programs: spot and leopard
  • For Leopard, please be sure that the Leopard and Subscriber applications are in the same folder.
  • Spitzer Pride should function under Mac OSX 10.5, but users may see a slight difference in the appearance of various windows.

For All Users- Remember to download the documentation Spot and Leopard as well as the software! If you find a bug, check the known bugs list for Spot or Leopard and if we don't already know about it, please submit a bug report.

For Solaris Users- The Solaris auto-update may take some time because it is going to download and install the new Java version 1.5. If you cancel the installation before it is complete, you will have to install Spitzer Pride from scratch by downloading the S17 software.

For Mac OS X Users - Spitzer Pride will only run under Tiger (OSX 10.4) or Leopard (OSX 10.5), since Java 1.5 is required.

For All Users- If you decide to use a different Java Runtime Environment than is provided by our own installers, or are running on a platform other than our standard installations (this, e.g., applies to Linux 64-bit machines), then you should use this 'generic' installation: Spitzer-pride17_0_2-generic.sh. First, obtain (or locate) your own local Java 1.5.x installation. Then, click on the link here and save the program to disk. To make the program executable, type: chmod +x Spitzer-pride_17_0_2-generic.sh. Finally, to install it, type: ./Spitzer-pride_17_0_2-generic.sh. The installation script will ask you for the explicit path to your Java directory. Or, alternatively, you can run the programs thereafter by typing, e.g., for Spot: spot -jre <JRE_DIRECTORY>. For more information on this, see the Spot and Leopard documentation.
