Spitzer Data Analysis Workshop #2
|
Contents: Overview | Agenda (includes talks) | Feedback Form | Registration
This free 5-day tutorial-style workshop is intended for Guest (GO) Observers or Archival (AR) researchers in Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 who wish to learn more about analyzing their Spitzer Space Telescope data with the various tools supported by the Spitzer Science Center (SSC). The workshop will occur at the SSC (Keith Spalding Bldg.) on the campus of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA, USA. The workshop consists of lectures on instrument performance, calibration, pipeline processing, and tools, such as MOPEX, SPICE, SMART, and IRSFRINGE, available for data analysis, as well as intensive hands-on experience with members of the Spitzer Instrument and Science User Support Teams. Due to the level of personal interaction to be offered, registration for this workshop is limited to about 25 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis. Strong preference will be given to those investigators who already have data in-hand for their Cycle 1 or 2 GO or AR programs.
The workshop is arranged with IRAC topics on August 15, MIPS topics on August 16 and 17, and IRS topics on August 18 and 19. Participants may attend some or all of the days, depending on their interests. Participants are required to bring a laptop (DHCP enabled; also bringing a CAT5, i.e., regular ethernet, cable would be helpful) loaded with both the data analysis tools software, available from the SSC website (ssc.spitzer.caltech.edu/postbcd), and the complement of their GO1 or GO2 data, available from the data archive via Leopard. Right now, these tools run under Solaris and Linux, but we anticipate their availability under Mac OSX in time for the workshop. Those participants who are unable to, or would rather not, run the tools and load their data on their own laptops, we expect to have a central Unix server, with ample disk space, for participants to log in (FROM THEIR OWN LAPTOPS) and run the tools. However, due to the computational and graphical intensive nature of the data reduction tools, we caution that this is likely to be rather slow. Participants are also strongly encouraged to have read the specific Data Handbooks of interest (available from ssc.spitzer.caltech.edu/archanaly/), as well as the documentation for the specific post-BCD tools, prior to arrival at the workshop. (Experience with the previous workshop revealed that those participants that do even a little pre-workshop preparation are able to get started faster on the first day they attend the workshop.) The presentations for the workshop will also be posted here in advance, so that participants can preview them. This will all ensure the participant's maximum benefit from the workshop.
Participants are required to handle their own transportation to/from and accommodations in Pasadena. Suggested transportation to and from area airports can be found at ssc.spitzer.caltech.edu/visitorinfo/airportbus.html. A list of local accommodations can be found at www.admissions.caltech.edu/visiting/accommodations.
Principal Investigators (PIs) are not required to attend; Co-investigators, postdocs, or students directly affiliated with the PI's Cycle 1 or 2 program may attend instead. Program ID numbers (pids) are required information on the registration pages, and verification will be obtained of a registrant's affiliation to the program. Registration for the workshop represents a commitment to attend. Registrants are required to indicate which days they intend to be present, if less than the full week. Registrants will first be acknowledged, pending verification, and will later be informed of their expectation to participate. A waiting list for participation will be kept, so spaces can be filled, in the event of cancellations.
We anticipate other, future workshops will be held in 2006. If you are unable to attend this workshop, therefore, there will likely be other opportunities in the near future to do so. We will continue to inform GO investigators of possible future data analysis workshops.
The agenda for this workshop is now available. The agenda for our previous March workshop is posted here. This link includes all of the online presentations from the previous workshop.
Registration is NOW CLOSED. This workshop is over and done with. View presentations from the workshop here. Looking for a more recent workshop? Try the main SSC workshops page to look for a more recent workshop. We (so far) have held two per year, one in the Spring and one in the late Summer.
